Holiday movies become family tradition

(ARA) – Holiday movies join trimming trees and hanging stockings as part of the holiday tradition for many families. More than 92 percent of redbox customers plan to celebrate the holidays with a movie, according to a recent survey conducted by the movie rental retailer. More respondents plan to watch a movie than exchange gifts or decorate a tree. In fact, films ranked as the number one way to relax and escape the hustle and bustle of the season.

“Movies provide families with a fun, affordable way to celebrate the holidays together,” says Gary Cohen of redbox. “Families across America enjoy sharing the experience of watching ‘How The Grinch Stole Christmas,’ wondering if Ralphie will get the Red Ryder BB gun or listening for the bells to ring for George Bailey.”

“It’s a Wonderful Life” and “A Christmas Story” are perennial favorites, however the list is expanding as new classics like “The Polar Express” or the comedy “Elf” share the spotlight among traditional holiday films. “Four Christmases” starring Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn, “Nothing Like the Holidays” with Debra Messing and John Leguizamo and “The Dog Who Saved Christmas” featuring Mario Lopez and Dean Cain are new to DVD this season. And it’s not just holiday films that families enjoy; additional big name titles available this season include “Star Trek,” “Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure” and “Up.”

With entertainment budgets shrinking and purse strings tightening, movies are not only a memorable way to celebrate the season as a family, they are an affordable way. Whether part of a holiday tradition or a weekly routine, for as little as a dollar a night, a family can rent a movie and create “family movie night.”

And renting movies is easier and more convenient than ever. Available in grocery stores and other retail locations throughout the area, redbox is a fully automated DVD rental kiosk. Simply select a movie from the screen, swipe a payment card and go. The movies can be returned to any redbox location nationwide.

Rent and return anywhere services are ideal for families that will be spending the holidays traveling. DVDs are a great way for kids to pass the time in the car, especially when road trips are longer than three to four hours.
